Friday, July 10th, 2009

Tasty, free watermelon. Tasty deals. What could be better? We’ll be at Slice of Chico on Saturday, chomping away. It starts at 9 a.m. Here’s link from sponsor Downtown Chico Business Association.

Free Swim Day at Shapiro Pool

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

You can’t beat the price at Shapiro Pool (near Chico Junior High at Oleander and Memorial Way) and Pleasant Valley Pool (which is not at PV High but rather Bidwell Junior at 2320 North Ave.) It’s just $1 for recreational swim time, or pay $75 for a summer pass for your entire family. And tomorrow, June 12, is free swim day from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Full details are on the Chico Area Recreation District Web site, but essentially: recreational swim 1-3:45 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 1-5 p.m.; family swim Monday-Thursday 4-9 p.m. Lap swim times are available as well. A bit of a caveat: We found out last summer that sometimes they close early if there aren’t enough swimmers.

Cinemark’s Summer Movie Clubhouse 2009

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Alec and his dad have been all about the $1 movies for the last two summers, and this season will be no exception. Cinemark’s Summer Movie Clubhouse series starts tomorrow, June 10, and it’s not too late to buy passes to all 10 movies for $5, or pay just $1 per movie.

The shows start at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 13. Here’s the compete schedule:

June 10 & 11 - Mr. Magoirum’s Wonder Emporium
June 17 & 18 - Star Wars: Clone Wars
June 24 & 25 - Daddy Day Care
July 1 & 2 - Pippi Longstocking
July 8 & 9 - Igor
July 15 & 16 - Horton Hears a Who
July 22 & 23 - Kung Fu Panda
Aug. 5 & 6 - Madagascar 2
Aug 12 & 13 - Kit Kittredge

Show up a little early, because in our experience, if a show sells out they’ll either open a second theater room or send the latecomers away. And nobody wants to see a little kid in tears.

Chico Nursery School Rummage Sale Is Saturday, April 25

Friday, April 24th, 2009

If this huge stack of boxes and bags in my entryway is any indication, it’s time for the awesome, annual Chico Nursery School rummage sale!

Great stuff from dozens of families, yours to choose from this Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to noon at Chico Nursery School: 1190 E. 1st Ave. There will be donuts and other treats for sale, too.

It’s all a fund-raiser for CNS, a nonprofit parent coop for preschoolers ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years old. The school was founded in 1968.

Friends of the Library book sale

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Before we hit the Saturday farmers’ market yesterday, we stopped by the book sale that’s put on by the Chico Friends of the Library. (It’s every Saturday, except for holidays, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the library at 1108 Sherman Ave.) We go almost every week, and we always score great books and magazines way cheap. This week we loaded up with dinosaur books, recent National Geographic Kids magazines, craft books and more for less than $4. It’s like a treasure hunt and money saver all in one.

99-cent Sundaes for Hot Fudge Sundae Day

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

It really seems like this holiday should fall on a Sunday, but I’m not complaining. Show up at Ben & Jerry’s between noon and 10 p.m. Friday, July 25 and get a hot fudge sundae for 99 cents. One per customer. There’s a coupon in local papers. Apparently this is also the week you can get the Elton John flavor, Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road and support his AIDS Foundation. Then, on Tuesday, July 29, participating B&J Scoop Shops are offering Iced TeaZers for 99 cents.

Waterhorse is $1 movie this Wednesday and Thursday

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Cinemark’s summer movie series continues July 23 and 24 with 10 a.m. showings of Waterhorse. After a few weeks of saying movies are “too scary,” Alec saw Space Chimps and Wall-E in the space of two days. He gave them two thumbs up. I hear the opening scene in Waterhorse (which is rated PG) is a little scary, so we’ll see how it goes. Click for more on Waterhorse. Next week is Surf’s Up.
