Whew! There’s so much fun stuff going on in Chico this weekend I can’t keep up! Please check out the ChicoKids.net calendar over to the right to see some of the great things going on.

Today we’re heading to Katherine’s Cottage for the WebKinz Extravaganza. Tomorrow, May 2, is Free Comic Book Day as well as the Pioneer Days Parade (11 a.m.!) , the Chico Artisans Faire and the Endangered Species Faire. We’ll see you there, rain or shine!

Nakland Children’s Carnival at Chico State April 26

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

We’re planning on heading over to the Chico State campus this afternoon for the Nakland Children’s Carnival. It runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. today (Sunday, April 26) on the Yolo lawn. It’s put on by the Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity and features inflatable games, carnival games, giveaway prizes and food. It’s free, too. You really can’t go wrong when you have “inflatable games” and “free” in the same sentence, so we’re looking forward to it.

Chico Kite Day

Chico Kite Day

We’re really looking forward to the annual Kite Day, which is coming up this Sunday, March 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at Community Park off 20th Street. We haven’t missed a year yet! We already have our kite, albeit a “one-season” one. (Due to get crunched.) As always, it’s sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District and Bird In Hand and will feature music from Oldies 102.1. Don’t forget your souvenir button! And if your kite meets with a kite-eating tree or is otherwise damaged, you can often get help fixing it right there. Also, there are prizes for the best homemade kites. The event is free.

Things to Do In Chico When It’s Raining

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Yes, the precipitation is much-needed, but if your kid is going as stir-crazy as mine is during this storm, you could probably use some fresh ideas on how to get your children out and about without getting drenched in the downpour. (Of course, there’s something to be said for a little mudpuddle splashing now and then.)

1. Library. Hit the Chico library for storytime or just to browse. Check out ChicoKids.net’s list of other Chico Storytimes for more options. It’s free fun!

2. Chico Museum. If you haven’t seen the circus exhibit, now’s your chance! Bring an umbrella in case you don’t get a parking spot close by.

3. Get Crafty. Head to Glazed Creations, String Bead, Busy Bee Ceramics or another crafty place where kids can explore their creativity and make something cool.

4. Child Care. Hand the “problem” off to someone else: Let KidsPark, gym child care, etc. get the wiggles out while you get a much-needed rest.

5. Chuck E. Cheese. Get out the Purell and head to Chuck E. Cheese. That’s where my husband took our son today, and $5 kept the kid happy and busy for two hours.

Also consider: the Chico Mall, the movies, a play, the Nature Center, Bidwell Mansion and some of the other fun places mentioned on ChicoKids.net. And please feel free to add your own suggestions to the comments. Thanks!

Free Movies at the Library

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Each Tuesday, the Butte County Library in Chico sponsors free movies for kids. They seem to be geared toward school age: Today’s movie is Bridge to Terabithia. The movies start at 3:30 p.m., making for a great after-school activity. For the younger set, don’t miss preschool storytime for ages 3 to 5 each Tuesday from 10:30 to 11. For a full list of library activities, visit the library’s kids page or the monthly calendar.

Tots Night Out at Athletic Horizons

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

I’m thinking of taking Alec to Tots Night Out at Athletic Horizons. It’s tonight, Saturday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. If your kid’s not in diapers, you can leave and do grownup stuff, or you stay if you want. Alec loves the gymnastics classes he’s been taking at Athletic Horizons so I’m sure he’s have fun at this monthly event. It includes snacks, art projects and games and is $12 per child ($10 for additional siblings). The Tots Night Out events are held the second Saturday of each month, but there won’t be one in December. Reservations are recommended. I’ve also heard the Friday morning playtimes at Athletic Horizons are super fun.
