We haven’t missed a year yet! We already have our kite, albeit a “one-season” one. (Due to get crunched.) As always, it’s sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District and Bird In Hand and will feature music from Oldies 102.1. Don’t forget your souvenir button! And if your kite meets with a kite-eating tree or is otherwise damaged, you can often get help fixing it right there. Also, there are prizes for the best homemade kites. The event is free.

FYI: The CARD-operated swimming pools at Chico and Bidwell junior high schools are officially scheduled to be open from 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays (as well as various hours during the week). But if there aren’t enough people using it, they close early. Totally understandable but a bummer. (Happened to our family today.) Still a great deal at $1 per person. You could also take a short drive to the Dwight Brinson Swim Center at 9451 Midway in Durham. Run by the Durham Recreation and Parks District, the pool is open for public swimming Monday-Friday 1-4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m. as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9. Admission is $2 and season passes are available.
