(Well, I wish we could also set off fireworks at home, but understandably it’s a fire hazard so they’re forbidden countywide.)

Tonight, July 3, is a fireworks show at the Outlaws game. Seats are being sold on the field for the first time ever, and the show can also be viewed from other nearby locations such as the Chico High football field.

CARD is sponsoring the traditional festivities in Bidwell Park, and I’m pasting in the info here:

Chico Kite Day

We’re really looking forward to the annual Kite Day, which is coming up this Sunday, March 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at Community Park off 20th Street. We haven’t missed a year yet! We already have our kite, albeit a “one-season” one. (Due to get crunched.) As always, it’s sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District and Bird In Hand and will feature music from Oldies 102.1. Don’t forget your souvenir button! And if your kite meets with a kite-eating tree or is otherwise damaged, you can often get help fixing it right there. Also, there are prizes for the best homemade kites. The event is free.

There’s one this Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Oakway Park, on West 8th Avenue off Nord Avenue, from 6-9 p.m. There are games and crafts as well as live music and a low-cost dinner. It sounds fun. I wonder if it’s OK to “crash” another neighborhood’s night out?

But if there aren’t enough people using it, they close early. Totally understandable but a bummer. (Happened to our family today.) Still a great deal at $1 per person. You could also take a short drive to the Dwight Brinson Swim Center at 9451 Midway in Durham. Run by the Durham Recreation and Parks District, the pool is open for public swimming Monday-Friday 1-4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m. as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9. Admission is $2 and season passes are available.

The lightning fires have made the air so smoky, the air quality experts are recommending kids be kept indoors. But once the air clears and we get back home to Chico, Alec and his dad are heading straight to Caper Acres. We are wishing the best for everyone during the fires; we miss you, Chico.
