Glazed Creations
1390 E. 9th Street
At Glazed Creations, kids (and grownups, for that matter) can paint their own figurines, plates and more, have them professionally fired and pick up their handiwork a few days later. You play for the item, plus a studio fee. Alec’s dad secretly took him to make me a bowl for Mother’s Day, and I never saw a prouder 3-year-old! You can also hold a party at the shop.

Michaels Arts & Crafts
801 East Ave.
The chain retailer offers a variety of crafting workshops and activities geared toward kids, generally for those age 5 and up. Check the store for an up-to-date list of events, but Michael’s corporate web site does have a crafts calendar. It costs a few dollars to participate, and registration in advance may be required.

String Bead
2201 Pillsbury Road (Almond Orchard Shopping Center)
Older kids will love trying their hand at jewely design at String Bead. The shop has classes and hosts parties as well.

Magic Moments & Keepsakes
2201 Pillsbury Road (Almond Orchard Shopping Center)
Children 11 and up are welcome in the Magic Moments & Keepsakes scrapbook store crop room. From making cards to designing mini albums, paper crafting is a hobby for all abilities and attention levels. There’s also a kids’ play area to keep little ones occupied while mom shops for the latest in scrapbooking supplies. (Full disclosure: Devanie Angel of ChicoKids.net teaches classes at the store.)
