We’re really looking forward to the annual Kite Day, which is coming up this Sunday, March 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at Community Park off 20th Street. We haven’t missed a year yet! We already have our kite, albeit a “one-season” one. (Due to get crunched.) As always, it’s sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District and Bird In Hand and will feature music from Oldies 102.1. Don’t forget your souvenir button! And if your kite meets with a kite-eating tree or is otherwise damaged, you can often get help fixing it right there. Also, there are prizes for the best homemade kites. The event is free.

CARD’s Breakfast with Santa

What could be more fun than breakfast with Santa Claus? Somehow, the Chico Area Recreation District has convinced the jolly old elf to take time out of his busy holiday schedule to enjoy a pancake breakfast with local children. This year, it’s Saturday, Dec. 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the CARD Center at 545 Vallombrosa Ave. Kids also get to visit Mrs. Claus and make crafts with the elves. It’s $8 per person. You must sign up for the event in advance, and in fact, it’s already filled up this year. (So, why am I posting this? Because there’s a wait list!) Call 895-4711 or visit the CARD Web site.

CARD’s Neighborhood Nights Out

The Chico Area Recreation District has been hosting a cool series of events called Neighborhood Night Out. There’s one this Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Oakway Park, on West 8th Avenue off Nord Avenue, from 6-9 p.m. There are games and crafts as well as live music and a low-cost dinner. It sounds fun. I wonder if it’s OK to “crash” another neighborhood’s night out?

CARD’s Family Movies in the Park

What a cool idea. Today’s kids may never get to go to a drive-in movie, but Chico kids are lucky enough to be able to attend Family Movies in the Park (Sycamore Field) sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District. The movies are free and the next one is Saturday, July 19 starting 15 minutes after sunset. This week’s showing is Bee Movie, the Jerry Seinfeld flick. The other movie nights are listed here on the CARD Web site.
